Third Sitting of the Committee on Defence and Security

The Committee on Defence and Security of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia held its third sitting on 28 July, chaired by Dragan Todorovic, Committee Chairman.


The Committee on Defence and Security of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia held its third sitting on 28 July, chaired by Dragan Todorovic, Committee Chairman.

The agenda contained the Information on the circumstances of the arrest of Radovan Karadzic, as well as the Information on the events following the arrest.

The sitting was attended by the Minister of Interior, Ivica Dacic who reiterated that the Ministry of Interior did not participate in the location, arrest and detention of Radovan Karadzic. Addressing the Committee members, Minister Dacic said that after receiving the information on the arrest, the Ministry of Interior’s task was to secure the building of the Special Court and preserve public peace and order, as well as to later ensure the security of the participants of the gatherings, state institutions, embassies and the press.

Following the discussion, the Committee concluded to request additional written information from the Security Information Agency, Military Security Agency and Military Intelligence Service on the circumstances of the arrest of Radovan Karadzic.

The Committee also brought a decision deeming that all the activities that brought about the discovery and apprehension of Radovan Karadzic have been conducted in line with the law, noting that this confirms the legal order of the Republic of Serbia and that respecting international law is in the highest interest of both the state and the citizens of Serbia.

The Committee members went on to conduct a discussion on the events following the apprehension of Radovan Karadzic. Concerning it, the Committee adopted a conclusion, by a majority of votes, to request that all who participate in public and political life abstain from behaviour that might lead to a dangerous aggravation of the political circumstances in Serbia. The Committee also requested that the pertinent authorities implement all measures and techniques to process the perpetrators of criminal offenses that endanger the safety of the state and its citizens as well as that of the representatives of the highest state organs, that disturb public peace and order and endanger property.
