Spanish and Italian NATO Parliamentary Assembly Delegations Learn About Continuous Discrimination of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija
The members of the delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly continue their participation in the spring session in Sofia with a meeting with the delegation of Spain, headed by Senator Fernando Guterres, and the delegation of both houses of the Italian Parliament, headed by Lorenzo Cesa.
In the meeting, the delegation thanked Spain for its firm and consistent respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia. It was indicated that by obtaining associate membership in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the so-called "Kosovo Assembly" would violate the legally binding UN Security Council Resolution 1244, as well as set a precedent in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, since so-called "Kosovo" is not recognised by all the members of the organisation, moreover, NATO forces are conducting a peacekeeping operation in Kosovo-Metohija, in accordance with UN mandate. In addition, this would violate the NATO PA Rules of Procedure. Finally, such a decision would represent a "reward" for all of Pristina’s unilateral moves so far and for the fact that today the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija live as if in a ghetto.
The members of the Spanish delegation reiterated their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia and emphasised that their position has not changed. They pointed out that Spain understands our position, because it itself faced similar problems in the past. They added that Spain, together with other countries, tried to postpone the adoption of this decision, but that the majority of NATO PA members supported its adoption at the meeting of the Standing Committee in Tallinn.
The delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia informed the Italian delegation about the very difficult situation in which the Serbs find themselves in Kosovo-Metohija. Italy is well aware of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, since it is the biggest contributor to the KFOR mission, as well as due to the fact that it has had 13 KFOR commanders since 1999, that is, that even now the Deputy Commander of KFOR is the Italian Brigadier General Federico Bernacca. The expressed gratitude for the fact that Italian soldiers are protecting the Serbian population and Orthodox holy sites, especially the Visoki Decani Monastery, which is the only remaining monastery under KFOR protection. In that context, they also drew attention to the recent decision, another in a series of shameful decisions by Pristina, to ban Serbian Patriarch Porfirije from entering Kosovo-Metohija.
The members of the Italian delegation emphasised the excellent bilateral relations between Serbia and Italy, recalling that they have always nurtured friendly relations with our country. They expressed their understanding of the situation in which the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija find themselves, recalling that the Italian delegation tried to make our voice heard in the Council of Europe. They pointed out that, if the NATO Parliamentary Assembly adopts this decision at the plenum on 27 May 2024, it would be the wrong decision for peace and stability in our region.
The heads of the Spanish and Italian delegations were handed a letter from the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic, in which special attention is drawn to the pervasive violence and open systemic, systematic and continuous discrimination against Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, as evidenced by the fact that during the past one year alone, more than 15% of the Serbian population left Kosovo-Metohija.
Among other things, it was pointed out that granting associate status to the so-called "Kosovo Assembly" in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly represented a "reward" for the aforementioned behaviour of Pristina, which is doing everything in its power to obstruct the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and not fulfil its obligations from the Brussels Agreement, including the fact that for more than 11 years it has been refusing to form the Community of Serb Municipalities.
The delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia participating in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session in Sofia comprises acting head Natasa Jovanovic and members Prof. Dr Zoran Dragisic and Goran Rakic. The meeting was also attended by the head of the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to NATO, Ambassador Branimir Filipovic, as well as the Serbian Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria, Doc. Dr Zeljko Jovic.
