PFG with Germany Meets with German Ambassador to Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Germany Vesna Markovic and the PFG members met today with German Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Thomas Schieb to discuss Serbia’s European path and the importance of the economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Head of the Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Germany Vesna Markovic stressed that full membership in the European Union remains Serbia’s primary foreign policy goal, as well as good regional cooperation and continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Our goal is peace and stability in the region, which also affects the stability of the European Union.

She welcomed Germany's position to support EU enlargement, with the hope and expectation that the more skeptical members would change their position. She said that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue makes the country’s EU negotiations a specific process compared to other candidate countries.

Markovic believes that it is important to improve cooperation with colleagues from the German Bundestag, dialogue between because of the country’s importance in the decision-making as regards admitting new states into the Union, as well as in the opening new chapters.

Ambassador Schieb said that the main task of the German Embassy in Belgrade is to support the country’s path to EU membership. "We are firmly convinced that Serbia will become a member as soon as it meets all the requisites. The path is not easy and for that very reason we will be supporting Serbia", said Schieb. He reminded the hosts that Germany is to have parliamentary elections in September, saying he expected that Germany's attitude towards Serbia would not be changed.

The Ambassador emphasised the importance of the National Assembly in the European integration process, as well as that of inter-parliamentary cooperation, which was hindered last year by the coronavirus pandemic, but he expressed hope that it would be expand in the coming period, which the PGH Head agreed with.

Speaking about the bilateral relations between Serbia and Germany, Schieb pointed out that they are both broad and at a very high level, the official and unofficial ones as well. He said the economic cooperation between the two countries has never been better than at this moment, stressing that the around 400 German companies currently operating in Serbia provide 70,000 jobs.

In the following conversation, the MPs raised topics of mutual interest, such as the improvement of economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in the fields of culture, tourism and environmental protection.
