National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs Meets with Head of European External Action Service Western Balkans Division
National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs met today with the Head of the Western Balkans Division in the European External Action Service Zuzana Michalkova Sutiakova.
Kovacs briefed the guest on the working methods of the National Assembly and the European Integration Committee. Since our country’s strategic goal is full membership in the EU, Kovacs pointed out that Serbia hopes to open cluster 3. She informed the official about the methodology that is applied in the National Assembly when considering the reports of the European Commission and the work of the European Integration Committee itself, with a special emphasis on the cooperation with the civil sector operating within the framework of the National Convention on the EU.
The meeting focused on the reform of the electoral legislation in Serbia, the state of the media, the fight against corruption, progress in chapters 23 and 24 and the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, with Kovacs emphasising that Serbia remains constructive and committed to dialogue, apostrophising that the rights of Serbs and non-Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija are not guaranteed, and everyday life is threatened. Also, the Parliament is committed to the reform of the electoral process and the implementation of ODIHR recommendations, and soon the Working Group for the Improvement of the Electoral Process is expected to present concrete proposals for this reform, Kovacs added. She announced that the National Assembly is expected to pass its annual work plan, as well as to continue with the reform processes in society, in accordance with the current reform agenda.
