National Assembly Deputy Speaker Snezana Paunovic Speaks at Session of UN Commission on the Status of Women

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Snezana Paunovic spoke at the Parliamentary Meeting held on the occasion of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, at the United Nations in New York, on 11 March 2025, addressing the topic “Women’s political participation: progress, setbacks and lessons learned for a way forward to achieving parity”, stressing at the very beginning that today women bravely walk the roads once accessible only to the male part of the population.

Paunovic underlined the high level of awareness about the importance of gender equality in the Republic of Serbia. Gender equality in Serbia is guaranteed by the Constitution the exercise of which is regulated through a system of legal measures and strategies.

“Serbia has done a great deal to guarantee the equality of women and men. We have a National Gender Equality Day, 11 June, with which the state of Serbia sends a clear message – we wish to improve gender equality and the position of women in Serbia in the best way we can. We are trying to make women in politics more visible and have them exercise their right to be elected to the highest state functions. Women need to be given equal opportunities to participate in political, economic and any other segment of our society”, said Paunovic.

She added that women are often considered to lack the ability for political leadership and come up against negative stereotypes stemming from the traditional gender division.

“That is why we need reforms and support for legislation that promotes equality and better protection of women in political processes so as to create a just, safe and inclusive political environment for all”, said Snezana Paunovic.

Finally, Paunovic stressed that it is vital that women support one another, to prop one another because female solidarity contributes to making sure the influence, position and voice of women be used in the best possible way. Women have to show solidarity and be loyal to one another.
