MP Meho Omerovic Meets with Students of University of Belgrade Faculty of Political Sciences

The Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Meho Omerovic met with a group of students of the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade, on 22 January 2016.

On the behalf of the Faculty of Political Sciences, the meeting was attended by professor Slavisa Orlovic and the students of the Faculty’s Master studies majoring in political analytics and management.

Meho Omerovic informed the students about the scope and activities of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality. He said that, apart from the sittings attended by representatives of competent ministries where it debates bills and other documents, the Committee also organises public hearings and sittings outside of the National Assembly seat which it considers very useful because they allow it direct contact with the institutions, civil society organisations and the citizens living on the territories of local self-governments. He also emphasised the importance of the Committee’s cooperation with the independent state bodies, especially the Ombudsman, Commissioner for Protection of Equality and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection since these institutions, like the Committee, deal with the protection of human rights, protection of vulnerable groups, gender equality, combating violence against women and the like. He also highlighted the importance of cooperation with international organisations, emphasising the support of the OSCE Mission in Serbia and UNDP. The Committee also includes civil society organisations in its activities to a great extent, depending on the topic it debates at a given time.

Professor Orlovic spoke of the long-standing cooperation between the Faculty of Political Sciences and the National Assembly, and the students mostly asked about the idea of personalised proportional electoral system and decrease in the number of MPs i.e. whether that kind of system would contribute to the efficiency of the National Assembly.
