Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Meho Omerovic on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

We mark this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 3 December, again aware of the fact that persons with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups of people. Their difficult position is most often the result of unemployment, discrimination, physical barriers and the stereotypes and prejudice still rife in our society. That is why persons with disabilities and their families deserve our support.

On the other hand, their contribution to our society cannot be denied, they have the right to independent life and decision-making. Their potential is far bigger than most of us can imagine.

It is the state’s duty to ensure them the environment and legal framework conducive to employment and social inclusion. However, everybody able to help promote and advance the skills of persons with disabilities should become engaged, and it is the task of each and every one of us to approach persons with disabilities without bias, mindful of their human rights.

That is why I would like to appeal to the relevant authorities, associations of persons with disabilities, NGOs, professional associations and other institutions to help us create a society of equal opportunities where persons with disabilities could be active citizens whose aptitudes and skills could contribute to social development. I hope the position of persons with disabilities improves in the coming period and that they join Serbia’s social and economic life as soon as possible.
