Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman Meets with Representatives of Association of Refugees and Displaced Persons in the Republic of Serbia

The Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Milimir Vujadinovic talked with representatives of the Association of Refugees and Displaced Persons in the Republic of Serbia about the problems faced by members of the refugee and displaced population, as well as proposals for improving cooperation with associations in the region and the diaspora.

Nenad Abramovic, President of the Coordination Board of Governors and President of the Association "Zavicaj" in Belgrade, informed the Committee Chairman that this association is a true representative of Serbs from outside Serbia and has 62 associations of exiled and displaced Serbs and refugees from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo-Metohija. He said that the work of the association is oriented towards fighting for a better social and legal status of refugees and displaced persons, preservation of the cultural heritage of the regions from which they fled, development of a culture of memory and publishing activities focused on topics dealing with the suffering of our people.

In the ensuing conversation, Chairman Vujadinovic and association representatives Nenad Abramovic and Jovan Cakarevic expressed satisfaction that Serbia has in recent years established joint dates and events with compatriots, such as commemorating the Remembrance Day on Victims of the "Storm". They also opined that the state of Serbia, led by President Aleksandar Vucic, invests significantly in infrastructure, especially in areas with population predominated by displaced Serbs from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, such as the suburban settlement of Busije in the municipality of Zemun with the construction of complete infrastructure and opening of an Elementary School last year.

The host and guests agreed that though there had been refugee programs in the last few decades, their realisation became particularly visible in the last few years.

The association representatives opined that it would be greatly significant to set up a body in Belgrade to deal with the issues of displaced persons, drawing attention to the burning problem of over 10,000 families in Serbia without a roof over their heads or employment, as well as about 2,500 displaced persons in Belgrade without housing.

Milimir Vujadinovic said he stood ready to personally contribute to the improvement of cooperation and, as Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, he would talk with relevant state institutions about improving the situation of refugees.

He agreed with the words of President Aleksandar Vucic that the people who came to Serbia in the 1990s, ennobled this country, became an integral part of Serbia and are among the bearers of its development.
