35th Sitting of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee

At the sitting held on 15 July, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee discussed the Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period January-March 2015 and April-June 2015.


Presenting the activity information, Minister of Interior Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic briefed the Committee members on the ongoing reform of the police force and the most important activities and results achieved in the fight against organised crime, trafficking in drugs and humans.

Presenting the results the Ministry had achieved in the fight against corruption, Minister Stefanovic said that 19% more instances of corruption had been discovered than last year. Stefanovic also outlined the results achieved in the fight against white-collar crime and the grey economy and the fight against all other types of crime. He said the criminal offense of domestic violence deserves more attention because of its frequency and the increased number of recently filed reports – 28% more than last year. The Minister of Interior also informed the Committee members about the situation concerning traffic safety.

Speaking of border security and migration, Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic said that the security at the state border and the surrounding area is stable. The numbers of illegal immigrants have drastically shot up, as has the number of asylum-seekers.

Informing the Committee members about the land security zone in AP Kosovo-Metohija, Minister Stefanovic said the situation is relatively peaceful and stable, but unpredictable.

He also presented the Ministry’s activities concerning international cooperation and European integration.

In the ensuing debate, the Committee members had questions about regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and requested additional information on the fight against corruption, the situation in the land security zone and traffic safety. They also had questions about the modernisation of the police and possible establishment of additional police stations in certain parts of Belgrade. In addition, they discussed improving the legislative framework needed to suppress domestic violence. The Committee members were also informed on course of the investigation into the attack on the Prime Minister in Srebrenica.

Following the debate, the Committee members accepted the Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period January-March 2015 and April-June 2015.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Marija Obradovic.
