Fifth Sitting of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region

At the sitting held on 6 February 2026, the members of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region were informed about the initiative of Svetlana Matic, President of the Austrian-Serbian Cultural Society from Vienna, regarding the proposal to establish a Serbian Cultural Centre in Vienna.

Matic emphasised that the establishment of the Serbian Cultural Centre in Vienna would help develop Serbian educational, cultural, spiritual and national identity, adding that Serbs have lived in Austria for five centuries and they are part of the history and culture of this country. She recalled many significant historical figures who lived in Vienna, such as Milutin Milankovic, Vuk Karadzic and Mina Karadzic.

Svetlana Matic said that cultural diplomacy can improve the standing of the vast Serbian community, and called on the members of the Committee to support the initiative to establish a Serbian Cultural Centre in Vienna.

In the course of the discussion, the Committee members agreed that it would be extremely important to establish a Serbian Cultural Centre in Vienna, as well as for Serbs in Austria to receive the status of a national minority, as this would give them the right to establish schools in the Serbian language, and that such an initiative should also come from the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region.

In the continuation of the session, the Committee members were informed about the activities implemented in cooperation with the Mathematical Grammar School concerning strengthening the cultural identity of the Serbian people.

Committee Chairman Dragan Stanojevic recalled that on the 150th anniversary of Mileva Maric Einstein's birth, the National Assembly House hosted an exhibition in her honour and on the occasion the Mathematical Grammar School was presented with a bust of her. The members of the Committee were addressed by the Principal of the Mathematical Grammar School, Ljiljana Katic, and the school’s best student, Andrej Drobnjakovic.

The sitting was also attended by Ambassador Dr Ljiljana Niksic, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Committee Chairman then informed the Committee members about the upcoming activities. He invited them to attend the screening of the documentary "The Jasenovac Pledge" as part of the culture of remembrance. He also proposed that, in February, the National Assembly host a ceremonial academy in honour of Nikola Tesla.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Dragan Stanojevic and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Radovan Tvrdisic, Aleksandar Cotric, Aleksandar Pavic, Dragan Stanojevic, MA Jadranka Jovanovic, Djordjo Djordjic, Dusan Maric, Marko Mladenovic and Natasa Mihajlovic.
