30th Sitting of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee

At the sitting held on 10 March, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee discussed the Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period October-December 2014.

The Ministry of Interior three-month activity information was presented by Minister of Interior Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic. He first briefed the Committee on the security situation in the land security zone in AP Kosovo-Metohija and the Ministry’s anti-terrorist activities, stressing that there had been no terrorist attacks in the reviewed period.

Minister Stefanovic said that the authorities have seized four times as much narcotics as in the same period last year. He believes the impressive results are the outcome of the changes introduced into the internal control policy. The authorities also uncovered two selling and distributing drugs on the territory of Belgrade. The amount of excise goods seized has also quadrupled.

The authorities uncovered 408 criminal offences with elements of corruption, while the overall percentage of crimes committed in the period October-December 2014 has dropped by 6.8% compared to the same period last year. After more than four months of intensive efforts the Task Force arrested Dragoslav Kosmajac and seven other persons suspected of different crimes.

Minister Stefanovic mentioned the rising numbers of domestic violence (10.2% rise compared to last year) as a sore point of the report. On the other hand, juvenile delinquency has dropped by 23.4%.

The Minister said that the Ministry of Interior had successfully maintained public peace and order despite many public events and protests. Speaking of the traffic safety estimates, Stefanovic says that the public debate on the draft law amending and modifying the Law on Traffic Safety which is supposed to introduce a series of strict measures to prevent traffic violations, is coming to an end.

“Unfortunately, I have some bad news. The Ministry of Interior has made it possible for all concerned parties to take part in traffic regulation at crossroads near schools, with the adequate equipment supplied by the traffic police. Exactly zero citizens responded!” said Stefanovic, appealing to the public to take part in the campaign that would motivate the citizens to contribute to the safety of children.

Before voting on the Ministry of Interior Activity Information, Committee Chairperson Marija Obradovic moved that the Committee vote on her proposal: to request from the Ministry of Interior to supply information on the activities of the Internal Police Control Sector in 2014. The Committee Chairperson also moved to vote on the proposal to request information from the Republic Public Prosecution on the processing of criminal charges. The Committee members accepted both proposals.

The Committee members then proceeded to accept the Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period October-December 2014.

The sitting was attended by Chief of Police Milorad Veljovic, advisor and chief-of-staff of the Minister of Interior Ivan Ristic and Head of the Emergency Situation Sector Predrag Maric.
