14th Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting held on 16 January, the Environmental Protection Committee discussed the Republic of Serbia 2011 Air Quality Situation Report.


Presenting the Report to the Committee members, Environmental Protection Agency Director Momcilo Zivkovic explained the types of monitoring the Report is based on, as well as the general estimation that particle pollution is the biggest source of air pollution in Serbia.
Zivkovic also pointed out the problem arisen from the abolition of the Environmental Protection Fund – how to finance air quality measurements in future.
In the ensuing discussion, the Committee members shared their opinions on the consequences of the abolition of the Environmental Protection Fund. They received more detailed information from the Agency representatives on the sources of pollution and effects and consequences of excessive air pollution, as well as on the air pollution measurement results in different regions in Serbia.
The Committee members went on to consider and adopt the Bill amending and modifying the Law on Air Protection, submitted by the Government and explained by the representative of the Ministry of Energy, Development and Environmental Protection, Zoran Ibrovic.
At the sitting, the Committee members discussed the details of the organisation of the Second public hearing on the impact of genetically modified organisms (transgenics) on the environment and health, to be held at the National Assembly, on 6 February 2013.

The sitting was chaired by the Committee Chairperson, Milica Vojic Markovic.
