11th Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee
At the sitting held on 11 December, the Environmental Protection Committee was presented the results of the research on the implementation of the Waste Management Law, outlined by Valentina Djureta from the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence.
The research on communal waste management was conducted in 26 municipalities intended for regional landfill centres. Problems such as lack of funds for the construction of regional landfills, inadequate technical equipment of utility services and insufficient capacities of local self-governments were brought to the fore.
The representative of the Green Initiative, Vladimir Radojicic, briefed the Committee members on the work of the non-governmental organisation whose activities are aimed toward organising waste collection actions and raising the citizens’ awareness on environmental pollution. The presentation also mentioned the new service value of waste.
The initiative of the Centre of Modern Skills to form a Green Group at the National Assembly comprising the MPs, which would deal with environmental protection issues was also presented at the Committee sitting.
Milena Ivanov of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, Director of the Plant Gene Bank, presented the Bill on the Confirmation of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, briefing the Committee members on the features of the resources, the obligations set out in the Treaty, as well as the direct benefit to individuals, organisations and agriculture ministries once the Treaty is signed.
The sitting was chaired by the Committee Chairperson, Milica Vojic Markovic.
