10th Sitting of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee

At the sitting held on 4 July, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee discussed the Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period January-March 2014, Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period April-June 2014 and Ministry of Interior activity plan for the upcoming period.


Minister of Interior Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic presented the most important chapters in the Ministry’s three-month information to the Committee members, highlighting the results achieved in the fight against organised crime, drug trafficking, corruption, criminality, economic and high-tech crime.
Stefanovic focused on the work of the traffic police and the need for its synchronised activity in the field of repression and prevention so as to reduce the number of traffic accidents on the roads, stressing the intensive activity of the Ministry’s Emergency Situation Sector in the alleviating of the impact of the disastrous floods Serbia suffered in May.
As regards the international activities of the Ministry of Interior, in the previous period they focused on preparations for the opening of chapter 24 in the European Union accession talks. In light of international cooperation, Stefanovic also highlighted the activities of the police on combating human trafficking, as well as joint actions with neighbouring border police forces on the prevention of illegal immigration.
Informing the Committee members of the Ministry of Interior activity plan for the upcoming period, the Minister listed nine bills currently being drafted, adding that the Bill on Asylum and Bill on Foreign Nationals need to find their way to the Assembly’s agenda in the next year as prerequisites for Serbia’s joining the European Union.
The Committee accepted the Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period January-March 2014 and the Ministry of Interior Activity Information for the period April-June 2014 by a majority vote, and on the occasion concluded:
- that the information is detailed, comprehensive and offer full insight into the work the Ministry of Interior and the police perform in pursuit of the key tasks stemming from their legal duties;
- that the Committee fully supports the Ministry of Interior and the police in opposing all challenges, risks and threats to the security of the Republic of Serbia and its citizens.
The Committee sitting was also attended by Chief of Police Milorad Veljovic, Assistant Minister and Emergency Situation Sector Chief Predrag Maric, Ministry Secretary Milorad Todorovic and advisor to the Minister and Chief-of Staff of the Minister’s Cabinet Ivan Ristic.

The sitting was chaired by Marija Obradovic, Committee Chairperson.
