Thirty-Second Sitting of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija

At the sitting held on 8 July the members of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija were briefed on the current course of negotiations with the provisional institutions of self-government in Pristina.

Head of the Serbian Government’s Negotiating Team for dialogue with Pristina Borislav Stefanovic presented the results of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina so far. He stressed that the results would be completed by the Government’s conclusion and not the agreement between the two sides and the conclusion would avoid any possibility of recognising Kosovo independence.

In the ensuing three-hour debate the Committee members posed numerous questions to the head of the Negotiating Team. They objected to the fact that the results of the dialogue and agreements so far have not been submitted in writing and the National Assembly had not discussed them. They also commented that by the agreement on license plates and identity cards Serbia recognise of Kosovo documents and opined that the solutions achieved, especially in the case of the license plates, did not benefit the Serbian community in Kosovo-Metohija, but the Albanian community instead. In the debate, the deputies also objected that the agreed solutions were coerced and a source of fear for the Serbian people and that there is no indication that the solutions would improve their lot.

Stefanovic said that the continuation of the negotiations would be difficult as Pristina would strive to make Serbia recognise Kosovo and exert pressure on the Kosovo Serbs. He restated that Serbia would in no way recognise the independence of Kosovo and said that by reaching said agreement Serbia did not cease doing any of its duties in Kosovo.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Ljubomir Kragovic.
