Third Sitting of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality

At the sitting held on 2 October, the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality unanimously elected MP Tamara Tripic, from the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, Committee Deputy Chairperson.


The Committee members unanimously adopted the Committee’s activity plan for the remainder of 2012, as we as an activity plan for 2013. In order to be able to discuss key areas of interest in more detail the Committee members deliberated on the potential for creating working groups within the Committee which would separately tackle human rights and liberties, national minority issues, matter of religion, gender equality, as well as civic petitions and proposals.
The Committee members agreed to send a request to the Republic Statistical Office asking for a Report on the conducted popular census, as well as to address a request to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia asking to renew the work of intergovernmental mixed commissions for national minorities.
The Committee members established the composition of the Committee delegation to meet with the delegation of the Romanian Parliament, scheduled to visit the National Assembly on 4 October. The delegation of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality will comprise MPs Elvira Kovacs, Snezana Stojanovic Plavsic, Teodora Vlahovic and Miletic Mihajlovic.
The Committee went on to adopt the following press release as regards the Pride Parade:
“At its third sitting, held on 2 October 2012, the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality raised the issue of the Committee’s position on the Pride Parade.
The Committee members are of the unanimous position that all citizens have the right to the protection of their human and minority rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and law, as well as the right to raise awareness of their problems by assembly and protest.
The Committee appeals to all competent state bodies and institutions to employ the measures within their authority to ensure the protection of the lives and safety of all the participants. In addition, the Committee appeals to all citizens that these activities take place in the spirit of tolerance and non-violence”.
The sitting was chaired by Meho Omerovic, Committee Chairman.
