Culture and Information and Interethnic Relations Committees held a joint sitting on 24 September. The process of privatisation of the local media was discussed at the sitting. Apart from the deputies, the representatives of the Ministry of Culture and state Broadcasting Agency also took part in the discussion.

In the discussion, opinions were voiced on the legal measures regulating the area of information in ethnic minority languages and problems concerning the privatisation of the local media that have programmes in minority languages.

The Members of Parliament stated that it is necessary to enable the right to information to all citizens, regardless of the proprietary structure of the media. The possibility of cooperation of local authorities and private media on programmes that ensure the rights of the members of minority communities was deemed as positive. Most of all, the position of the Privatisation Agency that the contracts which privatise the media should ensure the continuity of the programme was discussed.

The minutes of the sitting of the two Committees will be forwarded to all relevant and interested institutions so as to enable insight into all voiced arguments.
