SAPC Members Meet with EP Identity and Democracy Group

The members of the EU - Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee met today at the National Assembly House with French members of the European Parliament’s Identity and Democracy Group to discuss Serbia’s Euro-integration process, economic cooperation and the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.

The Chair of the EU - Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee Dr Vladimir Orlic said he was very pleased that the delegation had chosen Serbia for its first foreign visit in the new EP legislature, adding that Serbia values any and all types of cooperation with France very highly.

Recalling this year’s 180th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Serbia, Orlic emphasized the importance of culture and wide use of the French language in Serbia.

Speaking of European integration, Orlic said that full EU membership is Serbia’s strategic goal and the country is ready to continue to conduct reforms on its path to Europe.

With its balanced politics, in the face of many challenges, Serbia has proven to be a credible partner to the European Union and a factor of stability in the region, Orlic said.

Speaking of economic cooperation, Orlic opined that though extensive, it could be furthered. In its part of the region Serbia is the most successful in attracting foreign investment he said, adding that France ranks fifth among foreign investors in Serbia and its about 100 factories employ over 11,000 workers in Serbia.

Orlic also spoke about the difficult position of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija and their daily troubles, adding that, by imposing the illegitimate and anti-civilizational 100% customs tariff on products from central Serbia, Pristina had practically closed the door to dialogue and made it impossible to sit at a negotiating table.

Thierry Mariani, head of the Identity and Democracy Group delegation, said that the visit of the French MEPs to Serbia as the Group’s first foreign visit in the new EP legislature is no coincidence, it was a conscious choice because the French delegation considers the friendship with Serbia very important.

He stressed that, though France had recognized the independence of Kosovo, the Identity and Democracy Group believes that Kosovo is not a state and respects the sovereignty of every country. Mariani said that they endorse Serbia’s EU accession and its prospects of joining the EU are real, it is just a matter of date.

The meeting was also attended by MPs Milovan Drecun, Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Dusica Stojkovic, Jovan Palalic, Dragan Sormaz, Andrijana Avramov, Aleksandar Markovic, Vladimir Djuric, Vesna Markovic and Aleksandra Majkic.
