Representatives of Opposition Parliamentary Groups meet with EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement

Representatives of opposition parliamentary groups met today with the EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker and representative of the UNITED – SSP, PSG, OVERTURN, SLOGA Parliamentary Group Borko Stefanovic said that Serbia is under a lot of pressure in the process of European integration, primarily reflected in the unresolved issues between Belgrade and Pristina, the process of negotiations and disregard of the Brussels Agreement by the unilaterally declared so-called state of Kosovo. He stressed that the aligning the foreign policy with the EU is one of the preconditions for progress towards full membership in the organisation and expressed hope that Serbia would receive encouraging messages from the European Union during that process.

"As a candidate country, we should elect deputies to the European Parliament, without the right to vote, but with the right to speak before the parliament. That would be a sign of support, not only for Serbia, but for the entire Western Balkans," said Stefanovic.

"What Serbia will never accept is the recognition of the independent state of Kosovo," he emphasised.

In the course of the meeting, Stefanovic spoke about the situation and problems in Serbia.

EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi said that enlargement is one of the most important topics in the European Union and an issue of vital importance for the EU, accompanied by maintaining peace and stability. He also emphasised the importance of the rule of law, saying that this is the most important area when reporting on Serbia's progress. He also pointed out that the success of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is one of the preconditions for the further course of European integration.

Dragana Rakic, deputy president of the Democratic Party, Miroslav Aleksic of the People’s Party Parliamentary Group, Bojana Bukumirovic from the Oathkeepers Parliamentary Group, Radmila Vasic from Dveri Parliamentary Group, Robert Kozma from the GREEN – LEFT CLUB, DON’T LET BELGRADE D(R)OWN, WE HAVE TO Parliamentary Group, and Dr Djordje Miketic from the WE HAVE TO – TOGETHER Parliamentary Group, also spoke at the meeting.

Dissonant tones of the representatives of parliamentary groups were heard on the issue of Serbia's accession to the European Union during the meeting, and the question was raised whether Serbia's entry into the EU depends on the introduction of sanctions against Russia and the recognition of the fake state of Kosovo.
