Opposition Representatives Meets with European Council President Antonio Costa

Representatives of the National Assembly parliamentary groups consisting of opposition parties met today with the President of the European Council Antonio Costa.

The meeting was opened by MP Marinika Tepic, who asked what message the European Union plans to send to the citizens of Serbia, especially in light of the recent statement of EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, which stressed that Serbia has not fulfilled its promises regarding reform legislation, especially electoral reform.

Tepic also asked whether it was considered to cancel Mr Cocta's visit to Belgrade after the visit of the President of the Republic of Serbia to Moscow as this visit could be interpreted as support for the ruling regime. She also expressed concern that the internal political situation in Serbia is outside the focus of the European Union, unlike the alignment of foreign policy which is constantly highlighted as a priority.

European Council President Antonio Costa said that he was visiting six Western Balkan countries as part of his regional visit, and stressed that EU enlargement remains a clear political priority. He recalled that Serbia was expected to prepare media laws, as well as reform its electoral legislation, which should receive a comment from the European Commission next week. The opposition MPs pointed out that they had been completely excluded from the process, which raises serious concerns about transparency and democratic procedures.

The meeting was attended by MPs Miroslav Aleksic, Radomir Lazovic, Srdjan Milivojevic, Zdravko Ponos, Slobodan Lukic, Pavle Grbovic, Slavica Radovanovic, Ksenija Markovic, Biljana Djordjevic, Aleksandar Jovanovic and Ahmedin Skrijelj, who expressed concern about the deep socio-political crisis in the country, repression and the absence of democracy, the fact that Serbia has political prisoners, the lack of a response from the European Union about the possible use of a sound cannon during the demonstrations on 15 March this year, and the violation of elementary ecological norms.

Finally, the President of the European Council emphasized the importance of European values as the foundation of every democratic society and the stronghold in which to seek a way out of the current crisis.
