National Assembly Speaker Talks to Norwegian Prime Minister

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, visiting the Kingdom of Norway at the invitation of the Parliament Speaker Dag Terje Andersen, met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

The officials deemed the bilateral relations between Serbia and Norway to be on a very high level, particularly on the political plane, but added that there was room for more intense economic cooperation. The Serbia – Norway Business Forum held during President Boris Tadic’s visit in 2010 gave impulse to the two countries’ economic cooperation. They emphasised the importance of Norwegian development assistance, adding that Serbia was interested in seeing it continued so as to ensure further economic reform and strengthen economic cooperation, particularly in the spheres of investment and finance.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg highlighted the importance of the National Assembly’s legislative activity, particularly in the sphere of investment, since this is especially important for the two countries’ development and cooperation both in general business and the field of investment and trade. He stressed that Norway was interested in long-term economic cooperation with Serbia which could be best achieved by Serbia becoming an EU member, to which Norway offered its help.

Djukic Dejanovic thanked the Norwegian Government for granting Serbia more than 200 million EUR in non-refundable assistance in the past eight years which was used to directly finance the Serbian Government’s priority projects, and for its assistance to the Municipality of Gornji Milanovac where the house of Serbo-Norwegian friendship is situated.

The officials declared military cooperation excellent, particularly in the sphere of reform of the Serbian defense sector. They also noted the improvement of the two countries’ police cooperation.

Djukic Dejanovic laid flowers in front of Oslo Cathedral and honoured the victims of the terrorist attack of 22 July of this year.
