National Assembly Speaker Meets with UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with Françoise Jakob, United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Serbia.

He declared the cooperation with the UN positive and successful, stressing that he is open for its further continuation and improvement.

"For Serbia, the UN is one of the most important organisations in the context of preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the member states," said Dr Orlic. As he pointed out, respect for international law is the foundation of the United Nations and the Republic of Serbia applies this principle consistently - both in relation to itself and in relation to all the countries in the world. "And it was the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic who repeated several times - we demand full respect for the UN Charter and valid resolutions of the UN Security Council, and certainly Resolution 1244. This must be said today, because we see that officials from various countries are able to say absurd things - that Resolution 1244 is not valid for them or they only recognise part of it. By doing so, they openly say that, as far as they are concerned, international law is not important. The only thing that matters to them is their right of power and force," said the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

He reminded the guest of the Serbian people’s peaceful, dignified and non-violent protest, but the kidnapping and imprisoning people without any evidence is now followed by terrible threats from Pristina about removing the barricades even at the cost of human lives. "The situation is terribly difficult, but we will continue to advocate for dialogue and peace. Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija will continue to respect the international missions whose mandate derives from UN Security Council Resolution 1244. It is important that everyone strictly adheres to the mandate assigned to them by the UN," said Dr Orlic, adding that, on this, more than one hundred UN member states have the same positions as the Republic of Serbia.

Françoise Jacob said that the United Nations keeps the issue of Kosovo high on its agenda and that "additional efforts will be made to implement principles in practice and to preserve peace in the region for a prosperous future."

In the course of the meeting, Dr Orlic confirmed the active partnership between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the United Nations, primarily in the context of fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030 in the Republic of Serbia.

The UN Resident Coordinator underlined the importance of Agenda 2030 and the framework of cooperation between the UN and the Republic of Serbia, with special reference to the importance of the issues of green transition, human capital and human rights. "The National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia is an institution of exceptional importance for progress in these areas. We are ready to use this potential and explore new opportunities for cooperation together", said Jakob, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to support the acceleration of Serbia’s green transformation and at the same time become a regional leader in facing the climate crisis and creating new opportunities for everyone. She recognised the Serbian Government’s recent commitment to apply the principle "Leave noone behind" to all laws and national plans as a real step forward in reducing inequality. Jakob also expressed hope that the safe and positive environment for the participation of civil society and exercise of human rights and freedoms would be additionally strengthened.
