National Assembly Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Delegation at Berlin Process Gender Equality Conference Preparatory Meeting

The Chairperson of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Aleksandar Markovic and Committee member Andrijana Aleksandrov took part in the preparatory meeting for the Gender Equality Conference in the Berlin Process held in Bar, Montenegro, 11-13 June 2024.

The preparatory meeting was organised by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on the behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation’s project “Regional Cooperation for European Integration”.

The participants stressed that during the past decade of the Berlin Process the women’s civil society organisations drew attention to the absence of gender issues within the project. The aim of the meeting was to discuss recommendations which should enable the Berlin Process to in the future be more gender sensitive and raise awareness on the importance of the topic. They also considered the next steps before the conference on Feminist Development Policy: Approach to Accelerating the European Integration of the Western Balkans, to be held on 19 September 2024 in Berlin as the accompanying event within the Berlin Process.

The participants shared their views and recommendations considering the topics which will be on the agenda of the coming conference: importance of the fight against gender based violence and advancement of social security through the strengthening of female participation in the joint regional labour market; inclusion of women in decision making in the EU accession process; how the feminist perspective can contribute to the reconciliation process.

The Committee delegation endorsed the idea that gender equality should be included in the Berlin Process. They drew attention to the results achieved in the Republic of Serbia in terms of female political engagement and the need to establish cooperation within the Berlin Process among the women parliamentarians especially as regards the issues and challenges common for the entire region.

They stressed that the upcoming Conference could be a good opportunity to begin such cooperation. Based on the participants’ suggestions, they will formulate recommendations for the inclusion of gender perspective in the Berlin Process which will be presented at the upcoming Conference.
