Members of Three Committees and National Assembly Standing Delegation to NATO PA Meet with Delegation of NATO PA Committee on Civil Dimension of Security
The members of the committees on foreign affairs, defence and internal affairs, European integration and of the National Assembly standing delegation to the NATO PA met today, at the National Assembly House, with a delegation of the NATO PA Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security, headed by Lord Thomas Michael Jopling, NATO PA Vice-President and Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Democratic Governance of the NATO PA Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security.
The officials agreed that Serbia and the NATO alliance would continue to work together within the Partnership for Peace programme with the goal of preserving peace, prosperity and stability in the Balkan region.
Lord Thomas Michael Jopling, NATO PA Vice-President and Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Democratic Governance of the NATO PA Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security, praised the active participation of the National Assembly standing delegation to the NATO PA.
“Serbia is a key player when it comes to regional stability. We respect the position of the Serbian people and their leaders concerning NATO membership, as well as their willingness to participate in constructive partnership”, said Jopling.
He added that the cooperation between Serbia and NATO is intensive and comprehensive and commended the signing of the cooperation agreement concerning logistics. Speaking of the challenges the Alliance faces these days Jopling mainly focused on the threats arising from the armed conflicts around the world, the migrant crisis and terrorist threats, expressing concern that they might jeopardize the stability of the Western Balkans.
“We at the NATO PA urge both the NATO and the EU to remain dedicated to the region and support Serbia’s EU accession talks. We also appeal to national politicians to show the spirit of compromise for reform and eradication of corruption. We fully support the Serbian Government’s anti-corruption efforts and applaud their exceptional progress, reflected in the World Bank’s most recent data, and hope for a continued normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina”, said Jopling.
The constructive conversation with fellow parliamentarians from Lithuania, Portugal, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Croatia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia and Montenegro focused on the role the National Assembly plays in the EU accession process and cooperation with the Alliance, adjustment of the Serbian foreign policy to EU foreign policy, Serbia’s role in resolving the migrant crisis, the citizen’s attitude toward the Alliance and implementation of the Brussels Agreement.
National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gordana Comic said she was sure that the next National Assembly legislature would continue to adopt every document concerning cooperation with the NATO and that the next delegation to the NATO PA would continue to fully contribute to the organisation’s work.
European Integration Committee Chairman Aleksandar Senic said that the Committee had come to a decision regarding the consideration of Serbia’s negotiating positions with the EU as far back as 2013 and the full inclusion of the civil sector in the negotiating process through the establishment of the National Convention, a move noted and commended by the European Parliament.
Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Zarko Obradovic spoke about Serbia’s position as EU candidate country and transit country on the migrants’ route, stressing that root cause of the crisis and resolution of the situation in Syria is something that needs to be discussed. He said that Serbia will continue to follow the EU policy concerning the migrant crisis, but also fully support and assist the refugees while they are on its territory.
Dragan Sormaz, Head of the National Assembly delegation to the NATO PA, and delegation members Dubravka Filipovski and Dejan Radenkovic, spoke about the implementation of the Brussels Agreement by Serbia and pointed out that the Kosovo Albanians are obstructing the formation of the association/community of Serb majority municipalities in Kosovo- Metohija.
NATO PA Vice-President and Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Democratic Governance of the NATO PA Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security Lord Thomas Michael Jopling agreed that the matter calls for dialogue, reminding the parliamentarians that the coming Rose-Roth seminar would be held in Pristina.
The delegation of the NATO PA Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security also included the Chairman of the Committee Vitalino Canas, and the heads and members of 13 NATO countries, while on the behalf of the National Assembly the meeting was also attended by MPs Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Vesna Markovic, Branislav Blazic and Marko Djurisic.
