Informal Parliamentary Group for the Improvement of the Position of Persons with Disabilities

Today, the National Assembly set up an Informal Parliamentary Group for the Improvement of the Position of Persons with Disabilities.

Opening the founding meeting, National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic thanked all the representatives of associations of persons with disabilities and all MPs present who expressed their wish to be members of this informal parliamentary group, urging them to work together, regardless of political affiliations, to improve the position of persons with disabilities and create a more inclusive and fair society, which provides its members with equal opportunities for a normal life and prosperity. She underlined that this parliamentary group should work on analysing existing and proposing new laws, as well as strategies and action plans, and their application in practice.

The importance of the formation of this parliamentary group for the further improvement of the position of persons with disabilities and their full inclusion in social life was emphasised in the speeches given by representatives of various associations of persons with disabilities: executive director of the National Organization of Persons with Disabilities of Serbia (NOOIS) Ivanka Jovanovic, Ljupka Mihajlovski on behalf of the Alliance for Accessibility, on behalf of people with physical disabilities Tatjana Stojsic Petkovic from the National Organization of Persons with Disabilities of Serbia (NOOIS), on behalf of deaf people Mihailo Gordic from the Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Serbia, on behalf of blind people Milan Stosic from the Association of the Blind of Serbia and on behalf of persons with intellectual disabilities Marijana Taranovic Todorovic from the Association of MNRO Serbia.

The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Aleksandar Markovic said that something very important started today in the National Assembly. He stressed that any kind of discrimination against persons with disabilities is unacceptable and pointed out that the Republic of Serbia has done a lot on the legislative level to promote the rights of persons with disabilities, as well as to increase their visibility in our society and eliminate stereotypes and prejudices against them. Nevertheless, this is still a vulnerable social group, which faces a lot of problems, Markovic said, adding that this makes it very important to hear the experiences of people with disabilities, in order to further improve the legislation and their position. "Removing barriers and providing an accessible environment for all persons with disabilities is a particularly important topic, as a basic prerequisite for the full enjoyment of their human rights and freedoms," Markovic pointed out. In his speech, he praised the good examples of inclusion and social entrepreneurship seen so far.

The Chairman of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Haji Milorad Stosic pointed out that this and similar activities send a clear message about the need to raise awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities and the fight against their discrimination. He particularly emphasised the importance of the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes that contribute to the improvement of the legislative framework and policies aimed at protecting and improving the human rights of persons with disabilities. Stosic said that the wide use of sign language, as well as the accessibility of public space, from streets to institutions, would be very useful for better social inclusion.

After a discussion, in which MPs and representatives of associations of persons with disabilities exchanged opinions and recommendations for further work, the Decision on the Formation of the Parliamentary Group for the Improvement of the Position of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by acclamation, after which all the members signed the Decision on the Establishment of the Parliamentary Group, and MP Prof. Dr Slobodan Cvejic was elected to head it at the proposal of the National Assembly Speaker.
