Head and Members of PFG with Canada Meet with Canadian Ambassador to Serbia

The Head and members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Canada met with Canadian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Giles Norman to discuss the improvement of cooperation between the two countries, primarily at the parliamentary level, as well as in the sphere of economy, mining and education.

Emphasising the traditionally friendly relations between the two countries, the Head of the PFG with Canada Dubravka Filipovski reminded the attending that diplomatic relations date back to 1941, when Canada and Serbia fought together to preserve civilizational values. That is why, she stressed, it is extremely important for the two parliaments to cooperate intensively, especially through the working bodies whose scope of work is ecology, environmental protection, gender equality, economy and foreign affairs. She thanked Canada for investing in gender budgeting projects in Serbia.

Filipovski went on to say that the Serbian community in Canada is a special bond that connects the two nations and expressed hope that the idea of establishing a direct flight between Belgrade and Toronto would be realised. She also expressed the expectation that Canada's restrictive visa policy for Serbian citizens would soon be positively resolved.

Filipovski thanked Canada for supporting Serbia on its way to full membership in the European Union, stressing that this remains our country’s chief foreign policy goal.

The Head of the PFG with Canada pointed out that economic cooperation is the backbone of cooperation between the two countries, stating that currently 50 Canadian companies operate in Serbia and that Canadian investments are estimated to be around one billion US dollars, and emphasised that there is room for improvement in this regard.

Canadian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Giles Norman agreed that the relations between the two countries are at an exceptional level. He confirmed Canada's strong support for Serbia in the European integration process, stressing that with Serbia's accession to the EU, the entire region would flourish.

Speaking about the establishment of a direct flight on the Belgrade-Toronto route, the Ambassador said that Air Canada has greenlighted the idea and that he hopes a positive response will come from Air Serbia as well. Speaking about the Open Balkans initiative, the Ambassador emphasised that it is an extremely successful project, adding that Canada is interested in using its experience with oil to help the initiative, so that regional integration would not only be a political decision, but one also beneficial to the economy and the citizens.

In the course of the meeting, Filipovski informed the Ambassador about the current situation in Kosovo-Metohija and Serbia's position regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The meeting was also attended by PFG members Dragana Rakic, Slavica Radovanovic, Biljana Dragic, Ana Miljanic, Stasa Stojanovic, Branislav Josifovic and Natan Albahari. They were interested in the possibility of improving cooperation in the fight against domestic violence and exchanging experiences and good practices in the field. They also talked about the importance of European integration and how to intensify interparliamentary cooperation.
