Fourth Sitting of the Gender Equality Committee
At the sitting held on 25 September, the members of the Gender Equality Committee discussed the increasingly frequent misuse of information in the media which violate human rights.
At the sitting held on 25 September, the members of the Gender Equality Committee discussed the increasingly frequent misuse of information in the media which violate human rights. The Committee sitting was chaired by Elena Bozic-Talijan.
It was agreed that the Committee sends the media and press associations a letter of protest as a severe response to the trend of having victims of violence exposed to humiliation and compromising their dignity. Recent cases in which photographs of victims of domestic violence and rape were published in the media were the direct cause of the letter of protest.
The members of the Committee expressed concern for the unremitting violation of the existing laws and the Convention on Human Rights which guarantee the citizens protection from humiliating treatment and gender discrimination, as well as protection of reputation and dignity. In the discussion, it was also mentioned that, at the same time, the media misuse violates professional tenets and the Journalist’s Code.
The members of the Committee decided to invite representatives of the appropriate Ministries for Culture and Information, Justice and Interior, to their next sitting to ascertain specific measures for the prevention of such occurrences. Apart from that, they agreed to follow the conduct of the media in the upcoming period and initiate a modification of the regulations so as to prevent the misuse and manipulation of the victims for sensationalist purposes.
The Committee also called upon the Press Association to react timely to instances of unprofessional behaviour of the press and violation of the ethics code.
