Forty-Ninth Sitting of the Committee on Science and Technological Development
The members of the Committee on Science and Technological Development held their forty-ninth sitting, outside of the National Assembly seat and on the occasion visited Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, where they were briefed on the scientific facility, as well Nuclear Facilities of Serbia (NOS) Public Enterprise.
Dr Jovan Nedeljkovic, Director of the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences presented the work of the Institute, founded in 1948, which was one of the rare research centres dealing with nuclear energy in the 1960s. He briefed the guests on the number and structure of employees, as well as the goals of the four-year cycle including increasing the number of researches from 450 to 500, publishing 400 scientific papers a year and increasing participation in international projects. Dr Nedeljkovic stressed that the Institute was successful in the Ministry of Education and Science competition for financing scientific projects which for the first time featured integral interdisciplinary research projects.
Prof. Dr Dragan Domazet, Chairman of the Vinca Institute Board of Directors, said that the maximization of the Institute’s development could use assistance and the solution would be to turn the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences complex into a scientific research park which would contain several scientific institutions, note merely Vinca Institute and Nuclear Facilities of Serbia Public Enterprise as it has the appropriate conditions to enable the work of a much bigger number of researchers than the existing one. In addition, the management should be improved so as to optimize business dealings, concluded Domazet.
Prof. Dr Radivoje Mitrovic stated that the Strategy of Scientific and Technological Development for the period from 2010 to 2015 is an extremely significant document adding that transfer of knowledge and scientific results for the needs of the economy is the basic goal of scientific development.
Radojica Pesic, Director of Nuclear Facilities of Serbia Public Enterprise, pointed out that NOS was founded in 2009 and that its main activities are managing all the nuclear facilities in Serbia, radioactive waste management, implementing measures of radiation and nuclear safety on nuclear facility locations. Pesic pointed out transporting spent nuclear fuel to Russia, the country of origin, as the most important task the enterprise completed.
A discussion was opened in the continuation of the sitting, and the Committee members were interested in the perspectives for the development of the Institute and possible use of nuclear energy, as well as details of the transport of spent radioactive fuel to Russia.
Following the debate the Committee members toured the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences and Nuclear Facilities of Serbia Public Enterprise complex. On the occasion they visited the atomic physics laboratory, physics laboratory within which they visited the part for the production of radio-pharmaceuticals and Tesla accelerator installation, as well as the cyclotron. At the end of the visit, the Committee members visited nuclear reactors RA and RB.
