A delegation of the European Integration Committee took part in an inter-committee meeting organised by the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament, on 12 December 2024 in Brussels.
The Committee delegation comprised Milan Radin, Committee Deputy Chairman, Ana Miljanic, Committee member, and Dr Tijana Peric Diligenski, Committee deputy member.
The meeting was opened by Javier Zarazalejos, Chair of the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, who thanked the participants for their presence. The meeting was divided into two sessions.
In session I the participants exchanged views on the situation of the Rule of Law in 2024, how to enhance Union Values in the Democracy Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights (DRF) mechanism and were addressed by Michael McGrath, Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law, European Commission, Claire Bazy Malaurie, President of the Venice Commission, Laurent Pech, Dean of the School of Law, University College of Dublin, Michael Farrugia, Member of the Maltese House of Representatives, and Boris Dittrich, Member of the Dutch Senate. MPs Milan Radin and Dr Tijana Peric Diligenski took part in the debate in session I.
The topic of session II was checks and balances as pillars of the Rule of Law - how civil society organisations can contribute to this pillar of the Rule of Law, and the participants were addressed by Gabriel Toggenburg, Head of Human Rights Structures and Mechanisms Sector, European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, Michael Hamilton of Amnesty International, Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram, Co-Founder, Free Courts Civic Initiative, András Léderer of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Andreas Arthur Spanring, Member of the Federal Council of Austria and Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka, Member of the Polish Senate. Deputy Chairman of the European Integration Committee Milan Radin addressed the participants of session II.
