European Integration Committee Chairperson Addresses National Convention on EU Plenary Session

European Integration Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs spoke today at the 10th plenary session of the National Convention on the European Union, held in the National Assembly House.

Kovacs pointed out that the National Assembly, and especially the European Integration Committee, enjoys excellent cooperation with the non-governmental sector, which it considers an important segment of social and political life. It is important that citizens are involved in the process of making and implementing decisions, she stressed.

The European Integration Committee has direct communication with the Convention, primarily through consultative meetings when considering proposals of negotiating positions in the process of negotiations on the accession of the Republic of Serbia to the European Union, said the Committee Chairperson, reminding the attending that this was formulated in the Resolution on the Role of the National Assembly and Principles in the Negotiations on the Accession of the Republic of Serbia to the European Union adopted in 2014.

In her address, Elvira Kovacs stated that EU membership is Serbia's foreign policy priority, noting that there are numerous challenges and reforms that need to be implemented, not only for the sake of the EU accession, but for the sake of ourselves and improving the quality of our lives as well.

Speaking about the National Assembly’s work and the European Commission’s Progress Report, Kovacs mentioned the recent amendments to the Constitution in the area of the judiciary. It is also important to mention that after an inter-party dialogue conducted in cooperation with the European Parliament, a set of election laws was adopted in February 2022. The result of this is the current National Assembly legislature’s pluralism of political parties, also noted in the European Commission’s Progress Report on Serbia, stressed the European Integration Committee Chairperson.
