Commitment to Continue Frank, Friendly and Fruitful Cooperation between Serbia and China Confirmed

A delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, met for the fourth time within the framework of the Commission for Cooperation with the Chinese National People's Congress with colleagues from the People's Republic of China and confirmed both countries’ firm commitment to continue with the above all frank, friendly and fruitful cooperation founded at the highest level officials, presidents Aleksandar Vucic and Xi Jinping.

At the very beginning, National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus expressed satisfaction that in a joint statement both President Aleksandar Vucic and President Xi Jinping recognised the Cooperation Commission as a mechanism for the continued deepening of friendship between Serbia and China. She expressed deep gratitude to the People's Republic of China for its commitment to preserving world peace and stability and respect for the international order based on international law, for its principled and continuous support to Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the matter of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as its gratitude for the support in international organisations and institutions, above all the United Nations.

"All these difficult issues facing Serbia are easier to overcome with the help and support of our sincere friends, among which China occupies a special place. Serbia immensely appreciates that we are the first country in Central and Eastern Europe with which China will build, as President Xi said, a community with a common future in the New Era," she stressed.

The Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government Dr Ugljesa Mrdic said that the relations between the two countries are reflected in their mutual respect, support in matters of essential national interest, especially to preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the two countries, as well as in the field of growing economic cooperation. He said that the personal friendly relations between the presidents of Serbia and China, Aleksandar Vucic and Xi Jinping, give a special character and quality to the extraordinary political relations. He added that the cooperation between legislative institutions represents a very important segment of the further deepening of the comprehensive strategic partnership and that the overall interparliamentary cooperation in the previous period was exceptionally good and followed the trend of the general bilateral relations.

"I can proudly say that in the previous National Assembly legislature, the Parliamentary Friendship Group with China boasted 100 members out of 250 National Assembly MPs. This information speaks of the desire and interest of the MPs to work on improving relations with China", concluded Mrdic.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy Snezana Paunovic talked about bilateral economic and trade cooperation, as well as environmental protection and energy. She said that the People's Republic of China has been the largest foreign investor in Serbia for three years in a row and as such ranks among our most important economic partners. She suggested improving cooperation in the sphere of investments, especially through greenfield, the privatisation process and public-private partnership projects. She particularly emphasised the importance of the Free Trade Agreement with the People's Republic of China, which comes into force on 1 July 2024. In order to increase exports to the People's Republic of China, in addition to participating in fairs, she asked the Chinese friends to consider improving cooperation by organising trade missions, training in the best ways to tackle presentation on the Chinese market and establishing closer cooperation between institutions for the promotion of trade cooperation.

"When we talk about bilateral agreements between Serbia and China, the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement is the first step in the joint future of Serbia and China. We have great tasks ahead of us because we are obliged to follow the statesmanship vision of our two presidents, who I can freely say are the most important factor of peace and stability on the world political scene," said Paunovic.

Advisor to the National Assembly Speaker Dr Mihajlo Jovanovic said that the People's Republic of China was an important factor in Serbia’s the development in the past few years and this meeting of the delegations confirms the enormous potential for practical cooperation that the two presidents discussed at the beginning of May. He highlighted Serbia’s achievements and success of in the development of artificial intelligence, the ICT sector, biotechnology, believing that a new chapter is ahead of us through the intensification of cooperation in the field of ICT, bearing in mind that it is China that dictates global trends in innovation and technological achievements and that the Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening cooperation in the field of the digital economy as well as cooperation in the field of information and communication technologies between our two countries will help that.

"Thanks to the resolute and responsible policy of President Vucic, in 2014 our country entered a phase of progressive development of the entire society. The Prime Minister at the time, Ana Brnabic, and the wholehearted support of President Vucic laid the foundation for the modernisation of Serbia, and they are most responsible for the fact that the ICT sector has been recording the highest growth rate year after year, and is the fastest growing economic branch in Serbia, ranking our country among the leaders in digitisation and artificial intelligence in Europe. I sincerely believe that, in the years ahead, by working together with the People's Republic of China, through dedication and unreserved mutual support on the geopolitical scene, we will contribute to the further intensification of the overall cooperation between our two countries, led by the strong political and friendly relations between the presidents," said Jovanovic.

The Vice Chairman of the SC NPC Peng Qinghua extended a warm welcome to his Serbian colleagues, saying that he believes that with joint efforts, the Commission will contribute to the deepening of relations between the two countries, as well as between the two legislative institutions. He clearly indicated that the Chinese President’s recent historic visit to Serbia opened a new chapter of cooperation and that presidents Aleksandar Vucic and Xi Jinping are responsible for the jump in and historical successes of our relations, adding that this is the path to building a common future and that Serbia and China are steely friends who share both good and evil.
