Brnabic: 180 Years of SAI in the State – Proof of the People’s Wish to have Strong Institutions

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic said today at the Solemn Academy marking the 180th anniversary of the State Audit Institution said that the fact that for 180 Serbia has had an institution that controlled public spending of the citizens’ money shows that our ancestors have long believed that they have the right to know how the people’s money is spent, stressing that this control is all the more important now.

“Such a long existence of an institution, older than some European institution of the same type, shows that our people have always wanted to have strong institutions and an organised state. The SAI has proven to be one of the brightest examples of how institutions should work for the benefit of the citizens," stressed Brnabic, acting in her capacity as a special envoy of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic.

She added that the State Audit Institution is independent, devoid of any outside influence and that it is vital to protect its independence now and in the future.

She pointed out that the SAI does not have an easy task, which is to control the institutions and help the state of Serbia to wisely manage its citizens' funds, and thus directly influence the improvement of citizens' lives.

Addressing the Solemn Academy, the President of the Provincial Government, Maja Gojkovic, pointed out that the SAI is one of the most important independent control bodies, which is also an indispensable factor in the economic operation of the state.

According to her, this jubilee testifies to the continuity of Serbia's statehood and the long tradition of its institutions.

"Without its existence and irreplaceable role in the audit of public funds and their management, there would be no adequate management, no transparency and accountability in the public sector, which would also put social stability in question," said Gojkovic.

The President of the State Audit Institution and State Auditor General Dusko Pejovic spoke of the long history of this institution, which, regardless of its name, always had the task of controlling the spending of state funds and making sure, he said, that the state manages its resources wisely.

As he said, SAI is the highest authority for the audit of public funds and an independent institution that answers to the Serbian Assembly.

The Main Control, which is the forerunner of today's SAI, was founded in 1844.
