33rd Sitting of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society

At the sitting held on 17 February, the members of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society deliberated on the Bill on the Confirmation of the Amendments and Modifications to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, submitted by the Government.

Vera Dondur, State Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, said that the Convention affirms and defines matters Serbia has already accepted, so the adoption of this Bill merely formalises things that are already being implemented. The Convention obliges Serbia to improve its current situation, stressed Dondur, reminding that though the country has no nuclear material, it has certain remains from the past i.e. nuclear waste, as well as nuclear material used for medical purposes. Dondur added that the adoption of the Bill could prove very useful in the European accession process.

Sladjan Velinov, Director of the Agency for Protection Against Ionising Radiation and Nuclear Safety of Serbia, said that the Convention itself was passed in 1980, and these amendments and modifications, among other things, deal with the transport of nuclear waste within the borders of the signatory countries and with nuclear facilities.

Following a brief debate the Committee members unanimously accepted the Bill on the Confirmation of the Amendments and Modifications to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.

The Committee members selected Committee Deputy Chairman Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic to be their rapporteur at the National Assembly session.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Deputy Chairman Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, and attended by Committee members and deputy members Marko Atlagic, Jelisaveta Veljkovic, Mileta Poskurica, Nevenka Milosevic, Annamaria Vicsek, Milena Bicanin, Vladimir Orlic and Irena Aleksic.
