Two Student Parliaments Visit National Assembly

Members of the parliaments of the Fourth Belgrade Grammar School and the Belgrade Faculty of Economy visited the National Assembly House on 7 October.

Members of the parliaments of the Fourth Belgrade Grammar School and the Belgrade Faculty of Economy visited the National Assembly House on 7 October.

The young parliamentarians attended part of the current National Assembly session and were taken on a guided tour of the National Assembly House, after which they were familiarised with the electoral system, separation of powers and procedure for passing laws in the Republic of Serbia.

The visit was organised by the Office for communication between the deputies and the public which shall, according to plan, organise visits for all the student parliaments in Belgrade.

Addressing the students, deputy Nenad Konstantinovic said that visits by student parliaments are the occasion for the youth to become familiar with the work of the National Assembly which, he believes, has not been properly presented to the public. He believes that high-school and university students should launch an initiative and take part in the functioning of their educational institutions, as well as influence the work of the ministries and the state with their suggestions and proposals.

The students were mostly interested in the procedure for passing laws, as well as the deputies’ salaries, who, according to Konstantinovic earn 75 thousand RSD a month.

The members of student committees also asked various questions concerning European integration. Deputy Natasa Vuckovic explained that Serbia must adopt about 50 thousand pages of legal texts before it can join the European Union. She highlighted the importance of initiatives launched by student parliaments since some of their requests d important changes in certain legal documents, Natasa Vuckovic said.

The young parliamentarians were also addressed by deputies Dejan Nikolic and Edip Serifov.
