Stability of Region Vital for Balkans and Europe

The Chairman of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija Milovan Drecun received the Hungarian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Attila Pinter at his request. The officials agreed that stability in the region was vital for the Balkans and Europe.

The Chairman of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija briefed the Ambassador on the Committee’s work stating that the Republic of Serbia would continue to insist on a peaceful resolution of the Kosovo problem, a compromise, as well as on joint infrastructural projects and economic cooperation. The Ambassador restated that the two countries enjoy the highest level of bilateral relations and asked about the Republic of Serbia’s stance on the recent events in Kosovo-Metohija following Pristina’s special forces’ violence against the Serb people in the north of Kosovo and their political representatives and the arrest of Marko Djuric.

Drecun explained that Serbia’s approach will be three-pronged: it will ask for international support, establish the Community of Serb Municipalities in Kosovo-Metohija and respond peacefully to violence and find a way to continue the normalization of relations. “I believe that we have to redefine the strategy for the Belgrade-Pristina talks” said Drecun because Serbia had fulfilled everything set out in the Brussels Agreement whereas the other side has done practically nothing and used violence which can be seen as a refusal of dialogue and peaceful solution to the Kosovo problem.

Pinter said that stability in South East Europe is of paramount importance for Hungary, and Serbia is the key factor of stability. “It is in Hungary’s interest that Serbia becomes an EU member state and we strongly support its accession” said the Ambassador stressing that Hungary supports the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina. He also said that the Serbian Government and President are pursuing a smart policy and the common interest of all the countries in the region lies in its stability.

The officials agreed that the overall bilateral relations between Serbia and Hungary are excellent as evidenced by the reciprocal visits of their highest dignitaries and the recently signed agreements between the two countries.
