Sixth Sitting of the European Integration Committee

At the sitting held on 12 March 20, the members of the European Integration Committee considered, in principle, the Bill on Climate Change, submitted by the Government.

The Bill was presented by Assistant Minister for Environmental Protection Sandra Dokic who said that its goal is to establish a system to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a cost-effective manner and thus contribute to reaching emission levels needed to avoid dangerous global climate change and adverse impacts of climate change.

Reducing gas emissions and the impact on climate change will have a beneficial effect on health, the economy, water management and environmental protection in general. The Bill creates the legal basis needed to establish a GHG emission monitoring and reporting system in order to reduce GHG emissions and adapt to changing climatic conditions in accordance with the needs and capabilities of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the requirements of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Establishment of a GHG emission monitoring system is also a precondition for emissions trading upon accession to the EU, i.e. the proposed solutions are necessary and of special importance for formulating a negotiating position in the process of accession to the European Union, in the context of emissions trading. The implementation of the law will mean the implementation of legislative, administrative and administrative-supervisory, institutional-organisational, technical-operational and economic measures, as well as measures to raise public awareness.

Following the presentation and discussion, the Committee members adopted the Bill in principle.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs, and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Andrijana Avramov, Milan Ilic, Samira Cosovic, Dubravka Filipovski, Viktor Jevtovic, Ana Miljanic, Stanislava Janosevic, Zagorka Aleksic, Ilija Matejic, Milan Radin, Vesna Markovic, Ana Pesic and Dušica Stojkovic.
