Serbia’s European Perspective Taken Seriously Both by Serbia and European Union

“Serbia’s European perspective is taken most seriously both in Serbia and the European Union. EU accession is Serbia’s objective and the EU is there to make it possible”, said the President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert in his meeting with the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Germany.

The Bundestag President said that political will is crucial for development, as are a proper legislative framework and funds. He reminded the PFG that Germany has proven to be Serbia’s biggest trade partner, donor and investor.

“We are invested in the Western Balkan’s steady development and want to contribute to its economic and political stability because without stable democratic relations there can be no stable states”, said Lammert.

In his meeting with the PFG he said he was pleased by the increased interest among Serbian parliamentarians to cooperate with their counterparts in the Bundestag and reaffirmed that Germany would continue to support Serbia on its path to Europe, as it meets the defined criteria which concern both legislative harmonization and implementation of the legislation passed. Lammert also added that Germany would not fail to support the Berlin Process.

Vesna Markovic, Head of the PFG with Germany, emphasized the importance of President Lammert’s visit to the National Assembly as it sends the message that parliamentary cooperation is important and parliaments are essential for decision-making.

“We are aware of the role the Bundestag plays in the opening of negotiation chapters for which we are grateful. Our chief foreign policy goal is to join the EU, but we are equally invested into regional stability and cooperation which the Berlin Process greatly contributes to” said Markovic.

She said Serbia has high expectations of projects such as the Western Balkan Fund and Regional Youth Office, infrastructural projects in the region and the coming Summit in Trieste.

“It is important that EU enlargement is not overshadowed by the migrant crisis and Brexit. The migrant crisis has shown how important enlargement is both for the stability of our region and all of Europe”, said the Head of the PFG with Germany.

The meeting with the Bundestag President attended by PFG members Miroslav Aleksic, Elvira Kovacs, Dusica Stojkovic, Dr Muamer Bacevac, Gordana Comic, Marija Jevdjic and Nenad Bozic, also touched on Serbia’s minority communities’ contribution to the European integration process, the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Serbian citizens’ support of European integration and continued development of parliamentary cooperation between Serbia and Germany.
