Serbian and Iraqi Parliament Speakers Sign Memorandum of Understanding

The Speake of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic signed today with the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Iraq Mohammed Al-Halbousi, currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia, a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parliaments.


In the meeting that preceded the signing, the official agreed that the Memorandum will raise interparliamentary cooperation to a new level, as well as strengthen the foundations for the further development and improvement of overall relations.

Dr Orlic said that the visit of Speaker Al-Halbousi is taking place in the year marking the 65th anniversary of bilateral relations between Serbia and Iraq and has a historical character since it is the first visit at the highest parliamentary level in the last 24 years.

During the substantive and open conversation, the parliament speakers, jointly expressed their commitment to the principles of public international law. Al-Halbousi stressed that Iraq remains consistent in its support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia, which Dr Orlic was very grateful for. The Serbian Parliament Speaker informed the guest in detail about the extremely difficult situation in the southern Serbian province, the open terror carried out by Albin Kurti against the Serbian people, his daily attempts to lead to an open escalation and to permanently destroy peace and dialogue. "Serbia remains committed to preserving peace, stability, dialogue as the only correct way to reach a sustainable solution, as well as to its own development, progress and cooperation with friends and partners from all over the world, among which Iraq has an important place.

In the course of the meeting, the parliament speakers confirmed the two countries’ determination to continue to work toward the further development and improvement of mutually beneficial cooperation in the future. Speaker Al-Halbousi pointed out that the number and composition of his delegation attest to Iraq's readiness to work with friendly Serbia, expressing his belief that our country will share its rich experience in spheres of importance for Iraq and its further development and progress.

Opportunities for strengthening partnership in the field of economy, energy, health, agriculture, education, as well as in individual areas of infrastructure, in which Iraq is recording significant results and which Dr Orlic congratulated it on, proved to be topics attracting special attention.

The meeting with the Iraqi Parliament Speaker was attended by National Assembly Deputy Speakers Sandra Bozic and Snezana Paunovic, Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Iraq Marko Atlagic, Chairman of the Committee on Spatial Planning, Transport, Infrastructure and Telecommunications Ugljesa Markovic, Deputy Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Aleksandar Markovic, as well as Serbian Ambassador to Iraq Uros Balov. The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Security and Defence Committee Abbas Shail Al-Zamili, Chairwoman of the Foreign Relations Committee Dylan Ghafoor Salih, Chairwoman of the Strategic Planning Committee Leila Mehdi Abdulhusein, Chargé d'Affaires of the Iraqi Embassy in Serbia Mayadah Abdullah Yassen Al-Adhammi and the Third Secretary in the Embassy in charge of political cooperation Gaylan Jameel Alwan.
