Serbia Strongly Supports Interests of Child and Family and Economic Empowerment of Women

In the course of the debate on striking a balance between the best interest of the child and the need to keep families together, Dubravka Filipovski, member of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, said that there is no universal how-to for the best way to raise a child, but the child has to be the starting point of everything concerning family law.

Filipovski said that to find the right way to strike a balance between the best interest of the child and the need to keep families together, family should be accepted as point of origin from which to move toward relations in a wider sense – child as the holder of his/her own rights, then the family and the environment, and finally the state authorities.

As a positive example of economic empowerment of women through business incentives, Filipovski mentioned Serbia as a country with 34% women entrepreneurs who employ 200,000 people which has significantly improved their social standing.

Finally, Filipovski stressed that education, keeping women better informed, state self-employment incentives, efficient foreign trade and networking are essential for the economic sustainability of female-run enterprises, with microfinance playing a special role in the process.
