Serbia Committed to Peaceful Diplomatic Solution for Kosovo-Metohija

Russian State Duma member Sergei Gavrilov was unanimously elected President of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, parliamentary organization gathering members of 27 national parliaments, including Serbia, at the General Assembly in Athens.

He succeeded Sergei Popov who presided over the international organization for unity and cooperation of orthodox states for 14 years.

The jubilee General Assembly, hosted by the Hellenic Parliament, marked 25 years of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy and the attending were addressed by Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos who emphasized the importance of IAO for promoting cooperation and understanding between the orthodox and other fates. The Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, which Serbia is member of since 1995, supports our country’s efforts to help the Serbian people and preserve the Serbian orthodox and cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija.

“We would like to thank all the countries that respect international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, who did not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo and support Serbia’s efforts to resolve the problems in Kosovo through peaceful and diplomatic dialogue”, said the Head of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy Aleksandar Cotric.

Cotric also thanked all the countries supporting Serbia’s EU accession efforts. He stressed that “the country’s foreign policy priorities remain European integration, regional stability and dialogue with Pristina to find a lasting solution, not to Serbia’s detriment, with which both sides would be equally satisfied or dissatisfied”.

“At the same time we do not believe Serbia’s European integration to interfere with its good relations with Russia, a friendly state with which we wish to solidify traditional ties, primarily political, economic and cultural cooperation”, said Cotric in Athens

He added that Serbia did not and will not endorse the 2014 sanctions against Russia because it is an independent state that makes independent decisions and will continue to do so.

The General Assembly with the topic “Parliamentary democracy and Christian values: 25 years of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy”, is also attended by MPs Tijana Davidovac and Jelena Zaric Kovacevic, representing the National Assembly standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.
