Second Sitting of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija

At the sitting held on 1 August, the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija deliberated on the Kosovo-Metohija Office Activity Report for the period January-June 2014, submitted by the Office for Kosovo-Metohija.

The Committee members were also briefed on the ongoing talks for Republic of Serbia’s accession to the European Union, with a special focus on Chapter 35.
Presenting the Report, Director of the Office for Kosovo-Metohija Marko Djuric emphasised the need to improve the socio-economic situation in Kosovo-Metohija. To emphasise, Djuric stressed that the unemployment rate in Kosovo is higher than anywhere else in Serbia and exceeds 60%. That is why the Office aims to draft an economy-revival plan under the control of the Office and the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija, stresses Djuric. The Report covers the issues of privatisation, return, employee assistance, economic development, talks with Pristina and EU accession. Djuric said that Serbia implements the Brussels Agreement consistently and in full, abiding by the deadlines which, he claims, is not the case with the Pristina side.
Djuric concluded the presentation of the Report noting the substantial change in attitude and the active approach to Kosovo-Metohija aimed at an increased influence in the provincial institutions, which has already yielded its first results.
The Committee members were informed about the ongoing talks for Republic of Serbia’s accession to the European Union, with a special focus on Chapter 35, by Serbia’s Chief negotiator with the EU Tanja Miscevic. She highlighted the details of Chapter 35 which covers all Kosovo-Metohija related issues important for Republic of Serbia’s negotiations process with the EU. The negotiating team is attempting to deal with the lack of information as regards Chapter 35 pro-actively, stressed Miscevic.
The Committee members adopted the Report of the Office for Kosovo-Metohija, as well as the Decision to visit Kosovo-Metohija proposed by Office Director Marko Djuric.
The sitting was attended by the heads of the administrative districts in Kosovo-Metohija, and Axel Jaenicke on the behalf of the Office of the EU High Representative.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Milovan Drecun.
