Romanian Chamber of Deputies Speaker Alfred Simonis First Official Visit to Serbia

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania Alfred Simonis, currently in his first official bilateral visit to the Republic of Serbia since taking office.

Dr Orlic pointed to the traditional friendship and closeness between the two countries and the Serbian and Romanian peoples, expressing his belief that good political relations will result in the further strengthening of cooperation in the fields of economy, infrastructure, energy, as well as all other areas of mutual interest, which the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia is ready to fully contribute to.

He was especially pleased that Alfred Simonis, after taking office as the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania, came to Serbia for his first official bilateral visit, which is another significant confirmation of the existing friendship that at the same time lends a new, strong impulse to strengthen the overall relations between the two countries, especially as it comes 15 years after the last visit of the highest representative of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania to our country.

National Assembly Speaker Dr Orlic pointed out that Serbia particularly appreciates Romania's principled and firm position, grounded in international law, to respect Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, adding that the Republic of Serbia shares the same values and principles without exception.

Dr Orlic also informed the guest about the extremely difficult situation in which the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija find themselves, pointing out: "Our clear position is expressed in the words of the President of the Republic Aleksandar Vucic - that Serbia is committed to preserving peace and stability, knows its obligations, but that will never do anything that goes against its Constitution. Serbia has always behaved seriously and responsibly, and we expect others to fulfil their obligations, which they should have done 11 years ago," said Dr Orlic.

He also thanked Romania for its continuous support of Serbia’s European integration process, stressing that EU membership is our country’s strategic commitment.

The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania Alfred Simonis agreed that Serbia and Romania share traditionally friendly and close relations and reaffirmed that Romania supports Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and that it will always support Serbia's European integration, adding that Romania's experiences on that path can be of great benefit for our country. He expressed his willingness to continue cooperation in all areas of common interest, as well as for its additional intensification.

In the course of the meeting, the two officials jointly assessed that it is necessary to continue strengthening economic relations and that there is room to further increase trade exchange, as well as that it is extremely important to continue working on joint infrastructure projects, such as the construction of a Pancevo-Timisoara highway, strengthening of the energy infrastructure and all other planned activities, and that the additional connection of the two parliaments could greatly contribute to that.
