Rett Syndrome Awareness Day
“Sometimes, even small steps are needed and possible. As long as we walk we will be well, and all of us, citizens of Serbia, stand by your parents”, said the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic at the commemoration of 15 October, International Rett Syndrome Awareness Day, addressing the girls afflicted with the rare disease.
In front of the National Assembly House, Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic said that the girls and their parents are not alone in their combat with the illness. In the event titled Blue Sky Girls, held on the occasion of 15 October, International Rett Syndrome Awareness Day, girls afflicted with the illness climbed the steps of the most important building in our country - the National Assembly demonstrating that each step, although difficult is possible and achievable.
This symbolic event was organised in various countries in the world at the same time so as to raise awareness of the neurodevelopmental disorder classified as a rare disease. Rett syndrome affects girls in their second year of life causing movement, speech and walking difficulties.

The event was attended by State Secretary at the Ministry of Health Perisa Simonovic, President of the Serbian Medical Chamber Tatjana Radosavljevic, participants of the Days of Serbian Medical Diaspora 2011 conference, as well as members of the Assembly’s Children’s Rights Working Group, which held a sitting dedicated to the commemoration of the International Rett Syndrome Awareness Day immediately before the Blue Sky Girls event.
