Republic of Serbia Social and Economic Council Info Day at National Assembly

The National Assembly House hosted the Social and Economic Council of the Republic of Serbia Info Day where the MPs’ were briefed on the body’s work and objectives.


The Chair of the Social and Economic Council of the Republic of Serbia and President of the Association of Employers Milos Nenezic said that the Social and Economic Council, comprising six representatives of the Association of Employers, trade unions and the Government each, was established with the aim of engaging in and developing a social dialogue on the issues of importance for realizing economic and social freedoms and rights, improving the financial, social and economic position of employers and employees and their living and working conditions and developing the negotiation culture, said Nenezic. He said that the Council adopts decisions by consensus and its goal is to coordinate the views and interests of the employers, trade unions and Government representatives to make sure that any legislation passed is in everyone’s best interest.

Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Zoran Djordjevic, one of the Government representatives in the Social and Economic Council, emphasized the importance of the tripartite dialogue saying that the Council’s role is to provide opinions, recommendations and guidelines in the legislative and policy creation process, and adding that local social and economic councils are to be established in the upcoming period.

The president of the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia Ljubisav Orbovic and of TUC “Nezavisnost” Zoran Stojiljkovic spoke of the Council’s successes and difficulties, social dialogue from the viewpoint of the unions and about defending the rights and interests of employees.

European Integration Committee Chairman Nenad Canak spoke about the importance of social dialogue for reform and European integration. He said that two negotiation chapters – 2 and 19: freedom of movement for workers and social policy and employment, are a challenge because of the criteria Serbia is expected to meet.

Chairperson of the of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Milanka Jevtovic Vukojicic stressed the importance of the objectives of the Social and Economic Council and its role in legislative activities.
