Relations between Serbia and Guinea-Bissau to Gain New Momentum

The members of the Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee met with the Speaker of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau Cipriano Cassama, currently in official visit to Serbia, to discuss economic cooperation, exchange of students and parliamentary visits.


Committee Chairman Marijan Risticevic said he was very happy to have the opportunity to talk with the Speaker of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau and is sure that a fruitful and mutually beneficial cooperation would not be long coming. The Committee Chairman said that Serbia is in possession of five million hectares of agricultural land, four of which are arable, as well as excellent agricultural experts.

Cassama said he was pleased to re-launch cooperation with Serbia, dating back to the period when Guinea-Bissau fought for independence with the full support of the Non-Aligned Movement. The Speaker of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau said that had spoken with state dignitaries and visited agricultural companies which would be very successful on Guinea-Bissau’s market. He stated that his country needs mechanisation as well as experts to help advance agriculture. He added that his country is third in the world in the export of cashew, but suffers from an excessive import of grains. He went on to say that the country’s rich natural resources such as oil, phosphates and gems, are insufficiently exploited.

The officials also discussed livestock breeding, saying that an exchange of students and parliamentary visits would greatly help advance cooperation.

Prof. Dr Miladin Sevarlic said that Serbia is the eight corn exporter in the world and second in the yield of wheat by hectare, none of which are genetically modified. Milija Miletic spoke about cattle and sheep breeding and beekeeping in Serbia as potential areas of cooperation.

Cassama again took the opportunity to reaffirm that Guinea-Bissau’s respect of Serbia’s territorial integrity, saying that Serbia can count on its full supports in international organizations. The Committee members thanked Guinea-Bissau for the support and firm stance on the matter.

Wrapping up the meeting Risticevic said that for its part Serbia will inform and mobilize its parliamentarians and experts and it is up to Guinea-Bissau to decide what is useful and applicable, and Cassama said that this visit was the first step toward a successful cooperation.
