Public Hearing on “Local Elections in AP Kosovo-Metohija”

The Committee on Kosovo-Metohija held a public hearing on “Local Elections in AP Kosovo-Metohija” at the Small Hall of the National Assembly House on 5 April.

The Committee invited the National Assembly Speaker, representatives of the Government, Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija, Ministry of Human and Minority Rights, Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Republic Electoral Commission, National Assembly’s Local Self-Government Committee and the heads of the parliamentary groups to the public hearing, but none of the invited parties showed up. In addition to the Committee members and MPs, the public hearing was attended by representatives of Serbs from Kosovo-Metohija.
Committee Chairman Ljubomir Kragovic announced that he would deliver the petition by the Old Serbia organisation from Kosovo-Metohija containing 70 thousand signatures of the citizens of the southern Serbian province calling for local elections in Kosovo-Metohija to the National Assembly Speaker Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic.
In the ensuing discussion, the participants stressed that local elections have been called in Kosovo-Metohija, but no pre-election activities have been launched. They criticised the fact that the government representatives failed to come to the public hearing, declaring that failure to conduct local elections in Kosovo-Metohija would weaken the Serbian institutions and be a step toward their abolition in the Province.
