Progressive and Just Society Can Be Developed Only By Respecting Differences
On International Day for Tolerance, the Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, Meho Omerovic called for tolerance in Serbia, opining that a progressive and just society can only be developed by respecting differences.
He pointed out that prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination, even hatred of some national minorities and LGBT people are still widespread and present a huge obstacle to progress.
“The most tragic thing is that these are most visible among the youth who openly express intolerance of others and practice it daily. Acknowledging differences is a prerequisite for peace, stability and security of all in our society”, said Omerovic.
“The citizens”, he added, “must respect one another and appreciate those different from them, not only their own and those similar to them.
In ordered and just societies that Serbia strives to become, differences of religion, gender, nation, age, idea and sexual orientation cannot be an obstacle to living together”, concluded Omerovic.
