The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Southeast Asia (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) Miroslav Petrasinovic and PFG member Olivera Denic received, in the National Assembly House, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Serbia, H.E. Kyaw Tun.
In a cordial and substantial conversation, the official affirmed the commitment to further develop the friendly and traditionally good relations between the two countries, based on long-standing cooperation and mutual understanding. They particularly emphasised the importance of the historical connection between Serbia and Myanmar through the Non-Aligned Movement, which represents a solid foundation for strengthening dialogue and mutual support at the international level.
Petrasinovic stressed that the Republic of Serbia’s strategic goal is membership in the European Union, emphasising that Serbia, under the leadership of President Aleksandar Vucic, is pursuing an autonomous, independent and militarily neutral foreign policy. "We want to cooperate with everyone, pursuing a policy based on the principles of independence and autonomy, these are the pillars of our foreign policy," said Petrasinovic.
The Ambassador reiterated Myanmar's clear and consistent position of non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, accompanied by support for the Republic of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The PFG Head expressed gratitude for this principled support, stressing that Serbia highly values Myanmar's consistency. In that context, he also pointed out the difficult situation in which the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija find themselves, faced with frequent violations of their human and civil rights, saying that from the beginning of the year until 18 September, as many as 117 ethnically motivated attacks had been recorded.
"Considering the difficult political and social situation in Kosovo-Metohija, your support in international organisations is of great importance to our country and we are very grateful for it," Petrasinovic said.
The officials also discussed the possibilities of improving political and parliamentary dialogue, as well as strengthening cooperation in the field of economy, with a special emphasis on agriculture. They stressed both sides’ readiness to encourage projects of mutual interest and contribute to the deepening of overall bilateral relations through regular contacts and joint initiatives.
