Opposition Party Representatives Meet with UK Parliamentary Delegation

Representatives of the opposition parties met with the UK Parliamentary delegation at the National Assembly House and on the occasion broached the subjects of freedom of speech, situation in the media, respecting the democratic heritage and the National Assembly’s work.

John Whittingdale, member the House of Commons who headed the delegation, said that next year’s summit of Western Balkan countries in London would surely provide the parliamentarians with an excellent opportunity to meet, talk and exchange experiences. Whittingdale believes that the coming summit would be especially important for Serbia’s European path, stressing that even though the UK has started the procedure to leave the EU, it supports Serbia’s commitment to Euro-integration. He believes that EU accession could solve some of the problems and challenges Serbia is faced with at this time. In that sense, the UK parliamentary delegation wanted to know how the representatives of the opposition who endorse Serbia’s European path contribute to the process, and in their response the opposition MPs mainly focused on the opening of negotiation chapters, especially Chapter 23 – Judiciary and Fundamental Rights.

The opposition MPs thanked the UK Parliamentary delegation for their interest in the topics opened at today’s meeting and hoped that at the London summit they would have the chance to speak on each of them in greater detail.

The meeting was attended by the Head of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group Goran Ciric, Head of the Social Democratic Party Parliamentary Group Marko Djurisic, Enis Imamovic of SDA Sandzak, Head of the New Serbia - Movement for Serbia’s Salvation Parliamentary Group Sanda Raskovic Ivic and Jovan Jovanovic of the Independent MPs Club Parliamentary Group.
