Ninth Sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child

At the sitting held on 12 June, the members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child discussed, in principle, the Bill amending and modifying the Law on the Basic Principles of the System of Education and Upbringing, Bill on Elementary Education and Upbringing and the Bill on Secondary Education and Upbringing.

Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Dr Zarko Obradovic presented the three bills on the agenda for the Fifth Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in 2013 to the Committee members.
In the course of the discussion, the Committee members were mostly interested in the impact the amendments and modifications have on the further process of inclusion in schools. They also discussed the measures taken to prevent children from leaving the education system, especially Roma children who are often, due to the language barrier, enrolled in special classes.
In the debate on the three bills, it was said that there is no essential difference between some of the solutions offered by the bills and UNICEF’s opinion on said bills. The Committee members stressed that the MPs have already submitted amendments compliant with UNICEF’s opinion and that minor adjustments and explanations to some of the articles of the bills can be achieved if the submitter of adopted said amendments.

The sitting was chaired by MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, Committee Chairman.
